What’s in the Box?! – A Comprehensive Guide to Packing and Crating

May 21 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

$55
Your artwork was accepted into an exhibition halfway across the country – now what? Knowing how to properly pack and crate your artwork is arguably just as important as creating the work itself. This demo will walk you through the process of designing a crate or soft pack for your artwork (both 2D and 3D works) and the types of packing materials and construction methods used to ensure it safely makes it to its destination in one piece. We’ll go over it all – from wrapping and cradling small works, to constructing collapsible and break-apart crates for large-scale pieces. We’ll discuss the science behind crate design and how to mitigate even the smallest amount of vibration (right down to microscopic paint flecks)!Rainey Rawles is the Museum Designer & Preparator at the McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture. She was previously the Preparator of Fabrication for the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, where she served as the lead carpenter, fabricating casework and crate needs for the museum’s permanent collection and traveling exhibitions. As an art handler for the High, she has installed over forty exhibitions including Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors, Calder-Picasso, The Phillips Collection, and Sally Mann: A Thousand Crossings.
